This works with the following command: sudo systemctl start.

However, since 15.10, or maybe even 15.04, Ubuntu uses systemd which is expected to be used to start the X11 environment. You can do that manually (or many tweak to a personal script that gets run by startx) with: setsid unity. and once installed you just open a cygwin bash command prompt and type startx which gets it running. That is, startx will start the X11 screen but not Unity. At this point using reboot methods such as ctrl + alt + del will likely not work and will require a hard reboot. Specifically, Minimal GUI: sudo apt install xorg sudo apt install -no-install-recommends openbox Run the command startx and openbox will start (you can open a terminal there and run any application you want)' It has worked before with Ubuntu Server 20.04.1 but stopped working recently. If the system gives an error, most likely, you made a mistake when entering. If you look at the log file for Xorg (it's clearly identified in the /var/log directory). They for the most part just know what they are doing and optimize on OS level by installing and setting up applications the best way possible for their needs. I do not have this problem with other browsers. Here is an example of what you will see at some point running AMD Ryzen with Ubuntu 14.04.5 AMD64 Server: AMD RyUbuntu 14.04.5 Kernel Issues. Install GUI (desktop environment) on Ubuntu, CentOS or Debian server. Now you can easily examine the error and attempt to fix it. Ive had this happen before, but usually restarting Windows would resolve the issue. I have been using gnome for quite some time, but since updating to the latest version of Ubuntu (20.04.3 LTS) gnome-session is not working anymore (as in, it returns without actually starting up the desktop environment in VcXsrv).
